10 Tech-Trends: Predictive Or Causative?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

A widely-read, authoritative source of information will not only provide some insight into the future, but may well strongly influence it. Forbes magazine is a wonderful example. Are these great oracles prognosticators or influencers? In anticipating or envisioning a future which is described and promoted by a powerful source, does society and its institutions unconsciously move toward making these hypothesized futurescapes and innovations come into being, as if being "directed?"

This is both a philosophical and pragmatic consideration for all global futurists, trend-watchers and planning professionals. This recursive feedback effect is a prediction algorithm nightmare! Both Heisenberg and Nostradamus must be spinning in their graves.

I am an occasional reader of Forbes, and value not so much what wisdom their excellent writers may impart in terms of futurism and prediction, but the influence which they wield in terms of the masses, the resultant "re-posting media ripple effect," and the indisputable power of the self-fulfilling prophesy which Forbes, as a well-regarded "authoritative source" imputes into the fabric from which the future is woven...

Enjoy what follows:

Notwithstanding the prediction paradox discussed at the opening of my article, I found the advances cited in the above Forbes outline very much in accord with my own predictive inclinations. And I state this regardless of whether this information is predictive or causative.

Six Trending Indicators at 7/20/2011 - Evaluate, Extrapolate, Forecast and Prepare.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

These trends and general forecasts have been collected from a variety of sources, but will impact every single aspect of how we Humans, as a species, will live - the economy, the neighborhood, the regulatory proclivities of government, healthcare, aging, housing, quality of life, prevalence of and dependence upon growing technological enhancements, sustainability, the environment, and so many other things. The excerpts presented here are just a small cross-section of what I feel may be worthy of your attention.

Remember: knowledge is power, but only if it is applied.

Remember: vision is the extrapolation of trends enhanced by intuition and imagination - to deny your vision is not only to disrespect yourself, but it is to abdicate your responsibility to yourself and Humankind to mold the future, or to proactively prepare for the future. Letting the future rule you without your ever having cast a single vote is completely leaving your destiny to chance.

6 Trending Indicators at 7/20/2011 - Evaluate, Extrapolate, Forecast and Prepare.

Some article excerpts follow, with a miniscule amount of my input. Position yourself to go through the processes of extrapolation, imagination and be open to intuition. Engage in the exercise of Futurism. You're invited. It is truly an amalgam of art, science and other "mystical processes."

Census Update: What the World Will Look like in 2050
Time.com – Thu, Jun 30, 2011

Here is the world in 2050, as imagined by the U.S. Census Bureau: India will be the most populous nation, surpassing China sometime around 2025. The U.S. will remain exactly where it is now: in third place, with a population of 423 million (up from 308 million in 2010). And declining birth rates in two of the world's most economically and politically influential countries, Japan and Russia, will cause them to fall from their current positions as the 9th and 10th most populous nations, respectively, to 16th and 17th.

The findings are the result of population estimates and projections of 228 countries compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau's International Data Base (IDB). MORE

Global leaders call for a major shift to decriminalize drugs

by Liz Goodwin | The LookoutWed, Jun 1, 2011

A slew of big-name former politicians are endorsing a report that says the war on drugs is not working and that drug enforcement policy needs to fundamentally change. The Global Commission on Drug Policy will urge a "paradigm shift" that emphasizes public health over criminalization tomorrow at a meeting in New York City, The Guardian reports.

Those backing the report include former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and former Fed Chair Paul Volcker. Former elected leaders of Greece, Brazil and Colombia have also signed on. MORE

How to cure aging: One drug can extend life span

By Boonsri Dickinson | July 7, 2011, 9:44 AM PDT - SmartPlanet

Scientists believe they’ve found a drug that can slow down premature aging in mice and could one day be used to extend human life. This is the story of a drug called rapamycin, nicknamed the forever young drug. The key chemical in this drug was discovered in the soil on the famed, remote Easter Island, reports Technology Review.

Previously, the drug’s wonderful fountain of youth effects were seen in only in invertebrates such as fruit flies, yeast and nematode worms, where it helped cells manufacture new proteins and kept bad cells at bay. But now, the scientists are seeing that it has similar effects on the aging process in mammals. MORE

Consumers embrace mobile commerce globally: 91% in UK and 79% in Brazil have used mobile to engage in commerce

Submitted by Paul Skeldon on July 12, 2011 – Internet Retailing

Consumer engagement with mobile commerce has exploded, with as many as 91% of UK consumers having used their mobile device for commerce, to either research or purchase a product. The equivalent figure for Brazil is 79%, while the level did not dip below 72% in any of the markets surveyed.

According to figures in the Global Consumer Survey from MEF, the global community for mobile content and commerce, 82% of UK respondents access the mobile web on a daily basis, slightly less than the 84% that do so in Brazil. The high level of mobile web and commerce activity dovetail with a reduction in fixed-line internet usage: 41% of Brazilians and more than one-third (34%) of UK respondents now access the internet on their PCs less often than 18 months ago. The Mobile Way to Biz - by Romy Ribitzky Jul 12 2011 - Portfolio.Com
Carrying a smartphone and a tablet is no longer a business luxury, according to a majority of small businesses. It's a must-have for propelling companies forward, pushing revenues, and landing new clients, finds a survey from The Business Journals.
It's hard to imagine a Millennial entrepreneur or startup leader without a smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device lurking near.

Just 28 years after the first IBM personal computer debuted, the business world—and especially the small- and emerging-business sectors—is embracing mobility, with 59 percent saying wireless services are essential to their business, according to a survey conducted by The Business Journals of 2,223 business owners, CEOs, and presidents of companies with fewer than 500 employees. FDA plans to regulate some mobile phone apps
APAP – 9 hrs ago July 19th

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is taking the first steps toward regulating the rapidly expanding field of medical applications, or apps, for smart phones and other handheld devices.

With the rise of the iPhone, Android and other mobile devices has come a flood of applications designed to help people stay healthy. Industry analysts estimate there are already more than 17,000 medical applications available, ranging from calorie counters to programs that let doctors view medical scans on their phones.

The FDA says it will begin regulating a handful of these programs that pose the greatest risk if they don't work appropriately.

In a draft proposal, the agency says it will regulate applications that combine with medical devices already regulated by the agency, such as heart monitors that transmit to a smartphone. [end of article extracts]

One hint to be offered is that at least three of the article extracts are somewhat auto-correlative; that is to say that they relate to a similar topic or topics, so when you are reviewing these bits of data, your mind will have a propensity to focus on these as being more highly significant and you may assign them higher "weights." This is a human behavioral propensity that it is important to be aware of -- sometimes it is the the data provider's way of insinuating his or he own opinion into your evaluation, and sometimes it just happens to do with the frequency of a topic in the media. Anyway, give this bias, deliberate or not, due consideration.

My observation is simply this. Doors are opening -- some of them spell opportunity, and a few of them (the ones which ominously creak as they open) would be far better slammed tightly shut and permanently sealed.

You can tell me which is which. Or perhaps there might be an opportunity (for those with comple 360-degree vision) where others see intrusion, exclusion, invasiveness, the "Nanny State," or dangerous dependencies.

Hacking and Security Breaches: A Growing Problem, and A Growing Opportunity - Trending Now...

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Businesses (large and small), government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare providers and even computer security firms are being hacked. Their data (some of which invariably relates to you as a business, an individual, a consumer, and a person with certain affinities, closeted skeletons, health issues and legal or financial problems) cannot be regarded as secure.

The more highly dependent we become on mobile messaging, cyberspace data storage, zip drives, e-commerce and automatic bill payment via computer, the more vulnerable we become.

By hacking, I mean every type of informationa intrusion from social engineering (i.e., where a rogue employee at an insurance or other firm steals data and sells it), to credit card skimming, illicit GPA tracking, downloading of viruses, tracerware (keystroke loggers and the like, as well as GPS "locators"), phishing, trojan horses designed to take over some aspect of an electronic device's functioning, signal interception, secret duplication and re-routing of confidential data, brute force password decryption, hijacking of network connections, turning computers and mobile phones into transmitters of information to third parties, and just the ability to launch a robotic assault against a website or application. Various highly connective social media platforms and applications are helping to ease access to would-be abusers. Apple and Mac users have increased in numbers and percentages, and sure enough, the hackers are finding new opportunities to infiltrate these systems as they have done for years with PCs.

Hackers tend to emulate the viruses and worms that they create. They are very clever, very dangerous, capable of mutation and adaptation, and very good at disguising their presence from the host or victim.

The opportunities for hackers to access and utilize valuable information are increasing with our informational and communications habits -- so too are the opportunities for firms which are developing privacy safeguards, back-ups, firewalls, intrusion detectors, employee access controls, multi-layer security sytems, super-secured storage and security audit programs and assessment systems.

These latter parties will find giant and ever-expanding markets in both the private and public sectors, in organizations of all sizes and industries, and even for each other. Feeding on this insecurity-fueled market and concerned- investor environment (on both Main Street and Wall Street), venture capitalists and accredited angel investors will be increasing their interest in companies that are developing these countermeasure technologies.

With the recent hacking of Citigroup, the IMF, and a number of healthcare firms and record retention and storage facilities, informational security is becoming a recurring front-page news theme.

An example follows:

Is it safe for you to bank online?

The recent Citibank hacking shows why you need to take these precautions. Easiest way crooks can get into your PC

Informational security, data recovery, employee "watchware" and other fields are evolving at an accelerating pace, lagging slightly behind the development of new invasion and intrusion techniques and technology by the "black hats." Not surprisingly, many of these "black hats" are the ultimate opportunists -- they create a problem, and then sell an antidote to the disease which they themselves have created.

There will be some wonderful investment opportunities throughout the Global Economy in some early-stage ventures which show some promise in terms of developing scalable, customizable defenses and antidotes.

The 180-Degree Turn: The Re-Humanization of Marketing - CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE PRACTICE.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Note: This article was originally published in THE GLOBAL FUTURIST blog under a slightly different title. This version features an increased focus on Customer Experience Practice and Customer Service Excellence.

The Re-Humanization of Marketing - CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE PRACTICE.

Dear Readers:

Marketing has all but ceased to involve relationships and two-way communications (personalities aren't conveyed too effectively by an automated "press a number" answering service, or in a 140-character social media status update, i.e., Twitter Litter), and has become a matter of shouting about a product or service and then having an operational protocol for fulfillment. The salesmanship has been leached out; the friendship and familiarity between account representative and client has largely been replaced (inadequately) by automation; the Humanity of the process, the relationship between two or more Human Beings to finalize commerce has been minimized.

As a result, customer and client satisfaction with many companies and brands is very poor and getting worse. Loyalty and retention suffer in these hyper-automated companies because people have a hard-wired, deep-seated need to be in personal contact with other people. If you have a captive client base (as in the case of any government-blessed utility or other monopoly), your clients have no choice but to use your services. They are handed to you -- and you are probably abusing, overcharging and underserving them -- if they could leave you, they would. But most emerging enterprises and non-monopolistic businesses, are fighting harder and harder to gain market share because they do not have a persona.

The companies in the small to medium-sized entrepreneurial market sector are merely burning eachother's margins down, and creating an increasing population of discontented, angry and frustrated customers. These people want to speak with a person who knows them, will listen to them, and be personally responsive to them.

The Human Factor will be a major determinant of success in acquiring and retaining market share in the near future. Since it has become so rare, it will actually be re-introduced as an innovative new way to conduct business. Look for the companies that are returning to a person-to-person customer services and marketing model, and you will see the new leaders in their respective spaces.

People want to be greeted by other people; assisted by other people; listened to by other people -- and they have become increasingly desperate for longer-term, dependable, predictable and comfortable "business friendships" with other people. The consumer market is quitely desperate for communion with their commerce -- and the companies that are willing to re-Humanize in order to provide that "personal touch" are going to grab large chunks of market share.

Think about it. I am saying what you've been thinking. Going just a bit further, the once nostalgic notion of CUSTOMER SERVICE is increasingly becoming an integral part of every business operating in a competitive market space...especially during an uncertain economy. Customers are asking to be seduced, listened to, heard, responded to, and treated attentively and personally. You can gain some insight into what CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE PRACTICE entails, and why it's becoming increasingly critical by clicking on the following link:

http://www.thenationalnetworker.com/cep.shtml

Trends to Watch:

1. An increase in the number of professional and consulting firms dedicating more of their personnel, marketing and resources to rendering Customer Experience Practice Services to Clients;

2. A growing chasm between the economic viability (and likely the profitability and relative share prices, if their shares or units are publicly-traded) of companies proactively integrating Customer Service Excellence (in the spirit of Total Quality Management - "TQM") and those who merely continue to lure customers in with "me-too" advertisements based upon price, disappoint them with miserable or non-touch service, and lose any prospect of repeat business or referral business. These old-schoolers will be giving up territory and fading away...

Observation:

In choosing a company to commit your investment funds to, or to partner with, take a look at how seriously they are investing in Customer Service Practice and practicing Customer Service Excellence -- they will stand out as winners increasingly often in the months and years to come. Then again, neither the author nor The Global Futurist offer any investment, financial, economic or other advice.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Thomas Frey's Blog - An Excellent Additional Resource For FUTURISTS, INTERNATIONALISTS and Members Of TNNWC Group.

Dear Friends:

I am adding a link to a wonderful new resource -- The Futurist Speaker -- http://www.futuristspeaker.com/ -- to THE GLOBAL FUTURIST, my blog at http://theglobalfuturist.blogspot.com/ .

This is a blog produced by Thomas Frey, Senior Futurist at the DaVinci Institute, and Google's top rated futurist speaker. Unlike most speakers, Tom works closely with his Board of Visionaries to develop original research studies, which enables him to speak on unusual topics, translating trends into unique opportunities.

Tom is an excellent writer with a very logical, coherent and non-politicized style of writing; he is also a top-rated speaker. I am inclined to agree with a great many of his trend citings and views. He is affiliated with The DaVinci Institute.

Please take a look at http://www.futuristspeaker.com/, and observe for yourself. It is my expectation that I will be referring to him very frequently as a resource in The National Networker Weekly Newsletter, The BLUE TUESDAY Report, and in other publications and bulletins published by TNNWC Group, LLC [you may join us for free by simply clicking on http://bit.ly/JoinTNNWC ]

His writing is not only unparalleled, but I believe that he uses spellcheck...I'm still saving up to get it.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

The Pendulum and The Pit - Retaliatory Regulation and Its Result - 04.23.2010

The Pendulum and The Pit - Retaliatory Regulation and Its Result - 04.23.2010

Note: This article was written by Douglas Castle, Vice Chairman of The National Networker Companies, for publication in THE GLOBAL FUTURIST, with all rights reserved.

Dear Fellow Futurists and Friends:

History has a tendency to repeat itself (with certain variations and aberrations which cannot usually be foreseen because they are not within the realm of Human physiology, behavioral psychology or our limited understanding of physics and complexity theory) in a cause-and-effect, wavelike pattern. The pattern is best observed from a distance and over long expanses of time.

The elusive aspect of prognostication by wave theory has to do with variations in certain aspects of the wave, such as its amplitude (depth, in peaks and valleys) and its frequency (the speed at which the wave will begin to reverse its direction) -- put simply, if we eliminate all kinds of comet collisions, accidental nuclear bomb detonations [oops!], alien invasions and far-reaching biological or geological disasters, we can have a fair idea about what is going to happen, but we don't know exactly when and to what extent.

With apologies to the late and profoundly tormented Edgar A. Poe (author of The Pit and The Pendulum), these waves are often described as "swings of the pendulum", from one extreme to the opposite extreme. As good citizens (I'm smirking just a bit), we are all gathered in a darkened pit underneath this massive object, feeling the swish in the rush of its blade, anticipating the moment that it will, sooner or later, make icy contact with our vulnerable and quivering flesh.

When you combine an event which is certain to occur (i.e., the slice) with an uncertain timeframe, you have a recipe for fear. Uncle Boris used to refer to this as the "Russian Roulette of Reality."

I can provide you with neither the timing nor the magnitude of the phenomena which I will outline here, but I would wager a goodly sum that they will certainly occur within the next three years throughout the industrialized world and to the greatest extent in the US:

1.   An angry, disillusioned populace and wildly zealous legislators, acting in concert with frustrated, increasingly unpopular and overwhelmed executives (presidents, prime ministers, kings, and other leaders), will force the passage of an historically unprecedented amount of draconian regulation ['retaliatory regulation'] which will impact every company in every industry sector. The costs of compliance, as well as the fines and penalties imposed for infractions, will drive many companies out of business, especially the smaller ones which are not romantically intertwined with their respective governments. The result:
  • Many small business failures;

  • Loss of private sector jobs (except for attorneys), with a great portion of these displaced workers being "absorbed" into employment within the government sector, which will grow. Sadly this growth will be neither productive nor profitable, and sovereign debt will increase, taxes upon those who are the easiest targets will increase, and productivity (real GDP, innovation, advancement) will decline. Remember "stagflation"? You will.;

  • The largest corporations and their respective governments will become increasingly interwoven, interdependent and inseparable in an unannounced merger. If you are neither an executive of a "too-big-to-fail" company, nor a government official, you will either be a veritable slave, a very aggressive entrepreneur, a trust fund beneficiary (if you are a scion blessed with the proper lineage of one of the ruling families), a thief, a prisoner (incarceration produces jobs and removes people on both sides of the bars from the unemployment statistics), or dead.

2.    Cults, common-interest groups, revivalist religious movements and very well-armed citizen militias will all be activated and agitated, each with more adherents than ever before, especially among those overtaxed and disenfranchised by the inevitable marriage of big business and big government, i.e., those "slow moving natives" who are called upon to sacrifice everything in order to pay for the sins and excesses of the privileged few.

3.    The newly married big business and government conglomerated entities will be at war with all of those people and groups cited in #2, above. This war will start with tighter governance, greater restrictions of all liberties and increasing demands upon an overtaxed, angry "outworlder" public -- and it will eventually escalate into violent confrontations.

Does this sound like science fiction? I believe that the three-part scenario outlined above has already commenced, albeit quietly, with a great many government diversions and distractions keeping the harsh light focused elsewhere, while the people in the pit are beginning to compare notes. When slaves communicate, when they unite, when they begin to organize, the masters (if they are awake and aware enough to notice these seditious and ambitious behaviors) tend to adopt a "kill-or-be-killed" attitude.

It might be a good idea to review your old school notes about Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Marie Antoinette, The Romanovs, Paul Revere, Che Guevarra, The Bay of Pigs,
the VietNam "conflict," the various Inquisitions, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the fall of Enron, and, of course, The Fall of the House of Usher.

I prescribe education, communication, organization, unification as a means to preparation for survival.

When next I post, I'll just revert to stating facts, citing trends and offering conjecture as to their implications. Thank you for indulging me this once and for letting me share my fears with you.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
