Computer Security: Codes Or Encryption? - Douglas E. Castle

Computer Security: Codes Or Encryption?

As computer hackers become increasingly sophisticated and collaborative over their efforts year after year, encryption (no matter how sophisticated or complex) will not provide an adequate defense against various forms of data interception, database compromise, and computer security. Instead of predicting the future, I am going to propose that encryption protocols be augmented by the use of private codes. While codes and code books would seem to be things of the past, they should well be revisited as a means of beating cyber criminals who intend to unlawfully intercept and abuse or corrupt your data.

The combination of encryption and code in securing important emails is a practical application of this combination of technologies. But before going further, allow me to differentiate between codes and ciphers.

Codes, which require a code translation book (preferably not recorded on your business' computers), are word or phrase substitutions. They are used in police and military communications, Gregg Shorthand, and in conveying other sensitive types of data transmissions and critical communications. They are very effective at keeping interlopers unaware of the meaning of the message (even if intercepted) because the only persons who know what the encoded expressions mean are the sender and recipient of the data, each with his or her respective code book. For example, in a message, the expression "All Clear" can easily mean "There is an emergency situation. We have been compromised. Abort the mission." The more code used in a data transmission, the more difficult it becomes for an illicit interceptor to translate the meaning of the correspondence.

Ciphers, as related to encryption rely on formula or algorithms where letters, numbers or symbols are consistently or formulaically substituted by other letters, numbers or symbols. Regrettably, even the most complex algorithms (even compounded ones or temporally shifting ones) are ready targets for hackers. The hackers' work is to find the algorithm -- and there are far too many programs designed to do just that. Codes, if properly constructed and changed periodically, are far more difficult to break. Using a combination of both codes and encryption should be the best practice for electronic communications of private information, and I am optimistic that I have either inadvertently predicted the future or influenced it for the benefit of my readers, clients and colleagues.

The Imminent Global Business Disaster

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The Imminent Global Business Disaster
The Next Major Worldwide Economic Crash Affecting Consumers And Businesses Alike
Anticipated Crisis To Occur During The Period Between 2015 And 2016

There is a high likelihood of a global business disaster on the near-term horizon, i.e., within a one- to two-year time frame. This disaster is most probably going to be felt the hardest in the United States, where it will have the potential to decimate all but a few government-entrenched and privileged businesses, and to sink all dollar-denominated investment portfolios, regardless of traditional investment diversification. This course to calamity is anticipated to be caused by a confluence (a simultaneous occurrence) of several major economic and banking trends and specific events. The collapse is anticipated by The Global Futurist and other predictive writers and organizations to last for a period of ten to twelve years once it has hit. I refer to the coming threat as a “business” disaster, because business is the offspring of economics that allows for supply and demand to function, and for the existence of commerce and consumerism...

Factors Involved In The Collapse:
=> Further unification and strengthening of the Eurozone Central Banking System – Europe's building of its own independent multinational bank and banking system with a greater circulation and acceptance of the Euro, and with a greater utilization of Euro-denominated financial instruments and commodities purchases, both B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to consumer) throughout the world;

=> A precipitous decline in U.S. Domestic stock prices as predicted by the trending of the economic wave known as “Dow Megaphone Wave” which has accurately predicted the timing and amplitude of every major stock market collapse and resurrection over the past twenty years;

=> The growing acceptance of cybercurrency (such as Bitcoin) as a medium of exchange and a store of value in lieu of investment in and utilization of bank-backed sovereign currencies;

=> The increasing national indebtedness and decline in real savings in the United States – an economy built on debt and artificially propped up by government employment creation and expenditures – especially those expenditures which are fiscally re-cycled back into increasing the size of government, all to the unfortunate displacement of the productive private sector;

=> A declaration by the Bank For International Settlements (the “BIS,” one of the least known and understood as well as secretive and powerful international policy-making bodies in the world) that the United States Dollar is no longer the preferred reserve currency to be held by banks worldwide, leading the dollar into its steepest decline in recorded history.

The above trends and events could lead to the most severe business, economic and consumer crisis since the debacle of 2008, when the world's leading financial institutions demonstrated historically unprecedented irresponsibility, corruption and a total lack of contrition. The systemic cracks in the world's underlying economic foundation have not been repaired, and the business and consumer environments have not gained significant strength in their areas of long-embedded habitual weakness such as an increased ratio of borrowing to spending and an increased ratio of borrowing to saving. Hyper-leverage leads to disastrous results for consumers and businesses – this is, or should be, a matter of common sense.

Defense Strategies Before The Event Of A Collapse:

=> Basic survivalism – the stockpiling of non-perishable foods, potable water, fuel and the like – it is not ridiculous to keep an eye on what the “Doomsday Preppers” are doing and to follow their example, but not to a ridiculous extreme. Don't have a false sense of confidence because the government and mainstream media would have you believe that things have gotten better – this latter notion is utterly ridiculous. You cannot make a nation truly prosperous by perpetuating bad fiscal hygiene. You cannot perpetually repay debt with more borrowing and expect profit to result. Losses can only truly be reversed by significant ongoing increases in productivity.

=> Diversify your savings and investment holdings geographically and in terms of currency denomination – don't concentrate your dollars in any one industry, technology, country or currency; be an Internationalist. Consider investing balances in cybercurrencies. Cybercurrencies will only be bolstered by devaluation of bank-supported sovereign currencies. Since cybercurrencies are a P2P (“peer-to-peer”) variant on the theme of barter, i.e., where no banks are involved and interest charged, they are becoming a serious contender for the conduct of business and commerce, which is currently infested and controlled by banks in virtually every aspect. Incidentally, when I refer to cybercurrencies, I am using that term synonymously with electronic currencies and virtual currencies, for they all refer to the same concept;

=> Borrow up to your maximum in U.S. Dollars in order to purchase non-U.S. Dollar-denominated investments in cybercurrency, foreign currencies and tangible (but necessary and functional) assets currently at distressed prices, such as residential real estate in densely-populated areas and actual, physical commodities that have some practical use. Avoid obsessing over precious metals and exchange-traded commodities which become non-necessities in a survivalist worldscape; their values will reflect reality and not speculation in the trough of a long, deep depression. In terms of tangible commodities of true value, think in terms of such useful physical items as power generators, meal rations, medical supplies, solar panels, water purifiers, potassium iodide and the like. Items of this sort can be sold or traded at a substantial premium in a worst-case economic scenario. This is truly thinking “outside of the box” and “inside of the shelter”;

=> Insure your valuables to the greatest and most practical extent possible for damage and theft. Similarly hedge your investments and insure your portfolio, and be certain that you have both business interruption insurance and personal loss of income insurance if you are conventionally employed;

Don't be a lender expecting to be paid back in U.S. Dollars. It would be wiser to be a borrower while rates are artificially low, and to be paid back in cybercurrency or tangibles of true and lasting value. And be certain to have a disaster recovery strategy in place for your business as well as for your personal life. Private companies which deal in survivalism are making ever-increasing profits as a function of the populace’s suspicious that the economic outlook in the coming years may be less than rosy — and these businesses will be reaping fortunes in the trying times imminently ahead. If you can dedicate or re-purpose a portion or segment of your business to survivalism, this might provide a wise hedge against an uncertain and dangerous future.

Think about it and consider acting upon it sooner rather than later.

FORECASTING, FUTURISM AND UNCONVENTIONAL PREDICTORS

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

FORECASTING AND FUTURISM: USING “UNCONVENTIONAL” INDICATORS
Should Unconventional Predictive Systems Be Used By Forecasters?
By Douglas E. Castle, From The Global Futurist Blog

In forecasting and in futurism, I believe that it is best not to exclude any predictive system or indicator, regardless of how unconventional or seemingly – superstitious, from consideration. What is likely a great deal more important is just how much weight to assign to each of these systems and indicators. Going one step further, the more of these systems that one uses (assuming that each is given appropriate consideration or “weight” due to its historical correlation with the actual occurrence of events) in a multivariate prediction model, the better the quality and reliability of the forecast.

In a configuration being used by a forecaster where there appears to be a confluence amongst a large number of these predictive systems, both scientific and anecdotal, the more likely the outcome and the validity of the particular event being forecast. Plainly speaking, when all of the indicators in all of these systems point in the same direction and at the same time, the greater the likelihood of a given event's occurrence. Let's call this Douglas E. Castle's Theory Of Predictive Confluence. I like the sound of it.

Given that most self-proclaimed “Futurists” [i.e., pundits, gurus and prophets – I'm grinning now...] base their predictions either upon an amalgamation of predictions made by other forecasters or trend-spotters, or upon a combination of the extrapolation of past trends and events in combination with some applied imagination, I refuse to rule any potentially predictive system “out” simply because it is associated with the seemingly supernatural or superstitious.

In the recent past, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that when a significant number of supposedly credible authoritative sources predict an event, especially in the capital markets, it tends to come true; this, to me, is less about prediction and more about a self-fulfilling prophesy based upon a “herd movement” mentality.

In the simplest example, if a large number of these authorities and experts are predicting a bank's imminent collapse (regardless of any real financial data to support the prediction), there will be a high probability of depositors running to the bank to withdraw their funds in order to place tham at a “safer” institution, and, if the bank's shares are traded on a public exchange, it is also highly probable that the market price of the shares will take a precipitous dive. In this case, the future was actually made, and not merely predicted because of the influence of the forecasters on the behavior of consumers and investors. This is a kind of “forced future.”

In my forecasting, I use a recipe comprised of these ingredients:

  1. An extrapolation based upon correlative history and an application of my imagination;
  2. A Prediction Equation based upon all types of systems, both conventional and unconventional; and
  3. A composite of the predictions of other notable and influential futurists.

In the past, I have found this recipe to be the best for both short-term and longer-term forecasts.

Enjoy the spectacle of the Blood Moon in particular, and more generally, open your mind to all predictive systems and indicators – they all exist, some for thousands of years, for a reason. I choose to keep an open mind and be receptive, as I believe every businessperson, investor and futurist should.

Threat: 5 Tactless Truths About What Lies Ahead

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

As a Global Futurist, a Wave Theorist and a trend-spotter, I feel that the worst of economic and sociological times (in terms of the very foundations of civilization are not behind us -- they are lying out about a year or so in the distance, and will be more horrifying and more crippling for all but the very wealthiest of the world's citizenry (dynastic families and corporations blessed by and inextricably intertwined with government -- the true nobility that holds the fate of Humankind in its collective and frightfully avaricious hands) and some of those well-placed politicians who have access to pools of public or treasury funds and the protection of executive security.

The IMF (International Monetary Fund), a combination of a developmental bank and a center for American and allied intelligence has even downgraded (albeit gently) its projections for worldwide economic growth [please see below]. I watch the IMF very carefully -- they give subtle but meaningful cues as to the longer-term economics of the real world, as opposed to the treasuries and central banks of countries, which are largely mainstream media servers of propaganda-flavored beverages. The article brief which follows, a study in mature understatement, comes to us courtesy of SmartBrief Newsletters, and excellent source of information on an industry-by-industry basis:

IMF scales back prediction for global growth
The International Monetary Fund has lowered its forecast for 2013 growth of the world economy by 0.2 percentage point, to 3.1%, the same rate of expansion experienced last year. Chief Economist Olivier Blanchard says emerging markets are entering a slowdown. The IMF has downgraded forecasts for emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (7/9), Los Angeles Times (tiered subscription model)/Money & Co. blog (7/9), USA Today/The Associated Press (7/9)

Here are the tactless truths regarding the forces that are driving this financial and social bulldozer in the direction of the entire world as we've come to know it:

1) The fall of the U.S. dollar in terms of its perceived value internationally, as well as the actual prospect of it being replaced in the not-too-distant future as the world's reserve currency for all banks within the world's countries' respective central banking systems. The US has already incurred too much indebtedness, printed too much fiat currency, and lost its edge in terms of innovation and productivity;

2) The decline of the U.S. educational system, as well as the decline of other industrialized nations' educational systems;

3) An increase in the percentage of the world's impoverished and working poor versus the total population, as well as a significant growing disparity between real wages and real prices of the goods necessary for survival and consumerism;

4) The growing instability and endless wars in the Middle East, and the continuing spread of radicalized Islam throughout the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, Asia, the former Eastern Bloc Nations, and in metastasizing cells throughout the non-Islamic world and the West, in general;

5) The slowdown in the rate of reproduction amongst educated, highly skilled persons (as well as a decline in marriages and later unions), versus the unabated and increasing rate of reproduction amongst the poorest, neediest and least-skilled groups of people worldwide. This makes for a frightening demographic.

I think I've said more than enough, and with all due respect to Paula Dean, I must apologize for my failure to vet this article and redact things which may be construed as "Politically Incorrect" (gasp), or blatantly truthful.

Respectfully,

Douglas E Castle for The Global Futurist Blog and CFI Business Growth.

Social Media: The Coming Merger Of All Platforms

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

This Picture Is Irrelevant To The Post

Before making any guesses, I would respectfully request that my readers of The Global Futurist Blog take a few moments and carefully read the illustration (an embedded and somewhat abused image from a Scoop.It! advertisement which found its way into my inbox. By the way, Scoop.It is a wonderful targeted news alert and aggregator service which brings you articles which pertain to topics of your choice, and allows you to comment on them and them to share the complete work with your friends on social media. That's great personal PR.

But my suspicions tell me that within two years (by sometime in 2015), all of these social media channels will connected to one another such that each individual platform will simply become an "entry point" to the consolidated social media works network. I also believe that the rivalries between different social media companies will no longer relate to features and apps (since any social media "entry point" will get you to all of the goodies and special apps offered by the other social media outlets) but to a complex consumer-oriented type of branding. It might even require concessions and giveaways -- but the type of competition (technology, number of apps, compatibility with mobile equipment) will change dramatically, and become less technical and more about branding and consumer friendliness.

Thank you, Scoop.It!, for the inspiration.

The image says it all.

As always, thank you for reading me, and for sharing The Global Futurist articles with your friends, colleagues and contacts though the very social media "entry points, which we've been discussing. Share the articles and contribute to The Collective Consciousness.
